STORIES AND WORKSHOPS

Digital Stories from the Region’s Nurses, Students, Nursing Faculty, and Patients

The fabric of a healthy system is woven from shared stories. That’s why StoryCollab and the Nurse Narratives partners have built the initiative around digital storytelling workshops. Beginning in 2024, the StoryCollab team facilitated a series of online and in-person digital storytelling workshops.

Participants, up to 10 per workshop, shared a formative first-person story from their own nursing or healthcare-related experience. Each storyteller wrote their story, shared it, and received feedback in a group process. They then, with guidance from StoryCollab’s experienced facilitators, recorded the narrative and edited their story into a 2- to 4-minute short video, or digital story. These are those stories.

All Nurse Stories

“I have changed thanks to creating this story. I was able to put to words, process, and put together my experiences that helped solidify in my mind and heart who I want to be, both as a nurse and as a person.”

-Candy De La Fuente, RN at Franklin Woods Community Hospital

Student Stories

“It’s the first time I’ve ever reflected and spoken about what led me into nursing. It definitely reminded me why I got into the career I chose.”

-Joshua Poteet, ETSU College of Nursing Student

Faculty Stories

“I hope this story helps students recognize the importance of showing compassion to all patients, regardless of their background. It also highlights how we can overcome barriers and still work together towards a common goal.”

-Kacie Hauldren, ETSU College of Nursing Clinical Instructor

Patient Stories

“Writing this story and doing the video made me realize how much impact Jim had on everyone he met. Now I realize there were people walking with us trying to help us through a heart-breaking situation.  I hope this video helps young nurses to remember how much a small kindness can mean.”

-Linda Poland, Ballad Health Patient

StoryCollab partners with healthcare organizations, colleges of nursing, and medical institutions to use storytelling as a tool for empathy training, reflective practice, and narrative-based learning to compassionate care and provider retention and well-being. Interested in learning more?
